You do not have enough money, and little hope of finding a job without speaking spanish. San Juan is expensive and since you don't have a car that rules out pretty much the rest of the island as there is no reliable public transportation. The economy is horrible here, and we have about a 15% unemployment rate. The other guy recommended Arecibo, well I lived there for a year and would not recommend it at all. Even less people in Arecibo speak english, there is no big tourist draw there and it's a bit run down with businesses closing down every day. Why don't you try the Virgin Islands? St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. I don't mean to be harsh but I fell you need to be told the truth.

Well i am puerto rican and been there before. My family is from aguirre it is a town in Salinas Puerto Rico it is very country there but it is a low crime rate an its not a city. It is similar to America but its not as racist lol there are black puerto ricans , white ones, indian ones asian ones, and mixed like me but we all acept each other as puerto rican dont matter what color. If You are a white American not all the Puerto Ricans there are black or tan or mixed they do have pure white ones there tjat speak spanish there still puerto rican but if you are white you should fit in there are white puerto ricans. There Should be a English school in puerto rico being that its a commonwealth of America but very few. Most of the schools there speak spanish but teach English as a activity Just like hear in America the teach Spanish as an activity but speak English. Bad thing About P.R. is heat if u live in america where u are used to cool winters and snow be prepared to have 90 dergree christmas. and many Mosquitos. As of Crime Rate I dont Know. Puerto rico has a higher crime rate than New York and Los Angelas and Chicago. mOst Drugs. people that vacation in puerto Rico say you should not leave your resort at night depending on where your resort is in (san Juan) i dont know about this being true becuase i never been on a vacation in Puerto Rico I just go to visit family i also never toured around San Juan once i leave san juan air port i go straight to salinas which is about a hour drive. so the homacide rate is high. The best is no taxes. The crime rate isnt with strangers just stay away from drugs other than that very very safe. I know this becuase my uncle works in a proison in Puerto Rico he does something like aprole or cop something like that lol but he says crime rate is ridiculous he came to visit us last year. its mostly big cities. so you should really move to a town not a city, but the cities are the places that speak english alot which is were u need to be becuase of tourist from states soo your gonna want to be around English. Try looking up cities in Puerto Rico i will give you a couple that i know Salinas Ricon Isabela Culebra (island off main land) San Jaun Ponce Aguadilla Carolina Bayamon Ponce Guayama or just try some website to look up cities and crime rate but P.R. is a lovely place beutiful people of different color and ethnic groups. Should not be scrared

are the people there friendly? Yes, Puerto Ricans are friendly and welcoming of foreigners. and what about the schools? Are there private american schools? There are private all-English schools. Someone listed a few in the south. I lived in the North East in the Metro area, the most common ones were Carvin School and St. Francis School. they are looking for one that has a low crime rating, a busy city, and on the beach. any suggestions? The beach is close-by, no matter which city you live in. Puerto Rico has a high-crime rate overall though, so that's going to be hard. And busy? Do your parents know Puerto Rico is one of the most crowded places IN THE WORLD? It's in the Top 30 or something, Top 5 in the U.S. It's crazy crowded... everywhere. For an American I'd recommend living in San Juan. It's the Capital, you will find lots of English-speaking people, more jobs, better schools and a better lifestyle overall. In my experience.

Alec,

* Jobs are hard to find in PR, and you got a handicap in the language.

* Graduated from a film college? There are not many opportunities for filming / theater or TV industry here.

* very good resume... for what? bartender at a turist area? waitress at a restaurant? sales / marketing? you do not give details, so I do not know if that resume will help you find a job quickly.

Areas to look?

* with lack of spanish you must stick to tourist areas,

* other industries require a specific preparation like a degree in Engineering, Computer Science / Business Analyst, Chemistry, Finance, etc.

For a 1 bdrm or studio apartment in a relatively nice area (nothing to shabby, nothing too much) what am I looking to pay?

* San Juan, Condado areas are expensive, you may try to rent a place in a town near the metro area for a more economical apartment, and with transportation routes (train or bus) to San Juan. Try Carolina, Bayamon, Trujillo Alto, CataƱo, should be economical when compared to San Juan or Guaynabo.

Would it be a lot more beneficial to convince a friend to come?

* Two sharing the same apartment. Yes it would be easier economically, if conflicts of living with another person do not come up.

Hotel cost in SJ? A bit more than $100/night.

I think you should move away from tourist populated cities

Stay in arecibo

I do believe that you will need more then 5k to start there. Make sure you learn spanish too.

Better jobs are in arecibo also, so i heard, since its far from the over populated places.

Hotels cost about $ 110 a night in San juan also!

I moved to san juan right after college, just for fun. I lived there for 8 months. Best decision ever. One of my best friends came with me, which made it easier and less intimidating. After about 2 weeks we both had jobs at a restaurant in old san juan. Our interviews were in English, if that tells you anything. Spanish helps, but in this part of town, English is more important. We lived in Old San Juan, for the first month in a vacation rentals (Caleta is the name of the company) for $600/month in a 1 bedroom. I then moved in with some people we met the first week we were there. I lived in a 4 bedroom apt and my part of the rent was $375. Our power bill wasn't outrageous because there was no central a/c, just units in the bedrooms. I had no car, just walked everywhere. FYI, there are no hostels in san juan, so your options are expensive hotels or bare minimum guest houses. I spent my first few days in a guesthouse in isla verde called 'the coqui inn' i believe. concrete floor, no a/c. but if you don't mind roughing it, it was pretty cheap.

Overall, i say go for it. Move, get a restaurant job til you find a "real job". No car means no car payment. They have a bus system (however annoying and unreliable it may be) if you need to get from one part of town to the other. Rum is cheap. The beach is free. You'll meet some great people and enjoy a beautiful island. Good Luck!
